Energy law

The generation of renewable energy, a fleet of electric vehicles, CO2 reduction, reuse of waste streams… More and more entrepreneurs are focusing on sustainability. Not just for operational or production purposes, but also increasingly as a partner in energy agreements to achieve the renewable energy targets as a region. Companies come up with promising innovations while centres of expertise study the innovative environmental technologies. The developments in the energy sector happen in rapid succession and the need for support with the legal aspects is growing proportionately. In addition to traditional energy companies, more and more other companies are having to deal with energy issues nowadays. Some situations are more complex than others. In many cases, specific know-how is required for the correct legal approach to your question, and Dirkzwager offers this expertise. We have always had a strong focus on the energy sector. For many years, a large group of legal experts at our office have been acting for various parties in this sector. All this knowledge is pooled in Energy specialist department, so we can serve you even better. We know which issues exist, we are familiar with the specific legislation and regulations, and are up to date with the latest developments in the energy sector.

Lawyers and civil-law notaries from various areas of law work together closely in our specialist department: legal experts in and energy law, environmental law, corporate law, administrative law, procurement law and other areas of law that are closely related in this highly regulated market. Where the one knows the detailed provisions of the Electricity Act, the Natural Gas Act and the Heating Act, the other can give input in the area of network registrations, subsidy (application) assessments or permits. Together we cover the entire range of aspects that you could encounter in the energy world. Thanks to the combination of specialised knowledge and sector-related expertise, we can notify you in good time of changes that could affect your organisation or company.

Our focus areas include the following:

The team

The Energy specialist department consists of a team of lawyers and civil-law notaries, headed by lawyer Maarten Kole who has worked in the energy sector for more than 15 years. In 2011, Maarten completed the Energy Law programme at VU University Amsterdam. He frequently publishes work on the developments in the area of Energy Law and gives lectures on this across the country. Our team acts for various parties in the energy sector: not just for network operators and energy suppliers, but also for various municipalities, housing associations, developers and consultancy firms. Contribution to society We also want to make a contribution to society, through our knowledge and experience, by supporting regional initiatives in the energy sector. Dirkzwager is a knowledge partner of KiEMT and New Energy made in Arnhem. We are also involved in the Gelders Energieakkoord and De Energiebank. Our own organisation also pays special attention to sustainability. Dirkzwager is among the top 30% of the most sustainable companies in the world. In May 2016, EcoVadis awarded us a ‘silver-rating’ for this. Across borders Dirkzwager is a member of TELFA (Trans European Law Firms Alliance), a European alliance of law firms and civil-law notary practices who assist one other in cross-border issues. TELFA is affiliated with other international networks, such as the American USLAW.
